International Youth Day – 12 August 2025
Youth
Young people take action for a sustainable future
Every year, on August 12, we celebrate International Youth Day, an opportunity to highlight both the contributions of young people to the development of society and the challenges they face. Designated by the United Nations in 1999, the holiday is marked internationally by events, campaigns, and initiatives dedicated to young people from all corners of the world.
The theme of International Youth Day changes annually to highlight relevant topics that support youth development and active community involvement. The theme for 2025 is:
„Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond”
The chosen theme highlights the role that young people play in promoting sustainable development, focusing on local initiatives that can have a global impact. In a world undergoing rapid change, from climate crises to social and economic inequalities, young people are increasingly seen as pillars of change. They are not only beneficiaries of public policies, but also creators of innovative and lasting solutions.
What are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals adopted by the UN in 2015, which aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. Each goal has clear targets and progress indicators.
Why is youth involvement important?
The 2025 theme highlights local actions taken by young people—whether community initiatives, volunteer projects, civic activism, or social entrepreneurship. Although the impact of these actions may seem small, they contribute directly to achieving global goals. Plus, these initiatives show that change starts in the community, and young people are ready to be leaders of transformation.
Getting young people involved in achieving the SDGs is key because:
- Young people bring energy, creativity, and new perspectives to global issues.
- They are digitally connected and can use technology to generate innovative solutions.
- They represent the largest segment of the working population in many parts of the world, so they have the power to influence the direction of social and economic development.
What can we do on International Youth Day?
Institutions, non-governmental organizations, schools, and communities are encouraged to organize activities that:
- Promote youth initiatives in the field of sustainability;
- Educate the public about the importance of SDGs;
- Create spaces for dialogue between young people and decision-makers;
- Inspire and motivate young people to get involved in local projects.
