The Timiș County Youth Foundation (FITT) has launched “Arts-Based Approaches in Youth Work,” a practical booklet designed to support youth workers, educators, artists and facilitators in using creative methods to encourage participation, inclusion and learning among young people.

Developed based on FITT's experience in non-formal education, artistic activities and international youth projects, the booklet brings together practical methods, facilitation principles and lessons learnt from working with young people through art.

Turning Creative Experiences into Practical Tools

The publication presents five detailed examples of arts-based activities that can be adapted to different youth work contexts:

  • Collaborative Painting – encouraging teamwork, communication and shared decision-making.
  • Photography and Photovoice – using visual storytelling to explore community issues and express personal perspectives.
  • Collective Ceramic Mosaic – exploring identity, cultural diversity and collaboration through a shared artistic creation.
  • Frames of Expression – combining digital storytelling and animation with human rights education.
  • Forum Theatre – using participatory theatre to explore oppression, social challenges and possible solutions.

Each activity includes educational objectives, materials, step-by-step implementation guidance, reflection questions and suggestions for adaptation.

Beyond these examples, the booklet explores creative activities for well-being and personal reflection, as well as essential facilitation principles such as accessibility, voluntary participation, consent and emotional safety.

Sharing Knowledge Across Youth Work Networks

The booklet was officially launched during the Art Works seminar, where participants received printed copies and were introduced to the resource.

Following the launch, the publication was shared through the Council of Europe Quality Labelled Youth Centres network and the Global Platform network, as well as during national and local events, making it accessible to a wider community of youth work practitioners.

Through this publication, we aim to encourage youth organisations and practitioners to experiment with artistic approaches and adapt them to the interests, needs and realities of the young people they work with.

The “Arts-Based Approaches in Youth Work” booklet is now available for you as well, offering an accessible resource for anyone interested in bringing more creativity, expression and participation into youth work.

The publication was developed within the Erasmus+ project 2025-1-RO01-KA151-YOU-000305396, co-funded by the European Union.
